Recently, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 World Bicycle Day. Identifying the need to toughen and coordinate efforts to promote sustainable transportation and healthy human development, the UN has made this decision.
CEO of Bicycle Queensland, Anne Savage, welcomed the declaration.
“World Bicycle Day has been created with the unanimous support of UN Member States in an acknowledgement of the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries,” Ms Savage said.
“Importantly, the declaration recognises the contribution of the bicycle to community development, nurturing creativity and social engagement and strengthening our connection with the environment.”
The UN declaration also calls on Member States to improve road safety.
“We welcome the UN’s recognition that the creation of cycle-friendly streets is critical to sustainable transport infrastructure planning and design,” Ms Savage said.
“We all have a role to play in road safety and ensuring that our transport systems promote public health and wellbeing.
“World Bicycle Day will be a great opportunity to foster policies and strategies which actively encourage bike riding for people of all ages and abilities.
“Notably, the UN has called on nation states to invest in the development of a culture of cycling in society, to strengthen population health and encourage sustainable transport.
“We look forward to celebrating World Bicycle Day with all Queenslanders on Sunday June 3 this year.”
