We recently got in touch with Muc-off to review some of the finest mechanical and anatomical care products available in the market today. The fancy packaging with its trademark pink colour makes the commercials stand out on their YouTube channel. Up for review, today is the Muc-off Dry lube that has become one of our favourite. On comparing to other products in the market, we found more than one reason that makes Muc-off a must-have for every cyclist…
Product review:
Dry lubes are ideal for dry conditions to keep your chain clean by not absorbing excessive amounts of grit, grime, or dust. Not to forget, it can also be used on your derailleurs, shifters and cables. The Muc-Off-dry lube is recommended for those who love to go riding on-road or off-road in dry, dusty environments.
However, be it the road, MTB or Cyclocross, the lube does equal justice to all. The Muc-off Dry lube holds up well in moderately wet conditions and provides optimum drivetrain efficiency without attracting an excessive amount of abrasive contaminants.
The Muc-off Dry lube comes in a bottle of 50 ml, 120 ml and 1 litre with a pipette system that makes for convenient application. The lube consists of Polytetrafluoroethylene (made up wholly of carbon and fluorine) which makes the lube look like a waxy white material that’s oddly slippery.
This synthetic fluropolymer also makes the lube completely non-sticky when felt between your fingers, while lending it a free-flowing consistency that ensures it flows out easily from the bottle. We assume it’s because of the PTFE that it has a waxy Teflon texture. Not to forget, the product is also biodegradable and Eco-friendly – containing no petroleum based oils. Usage: Degrease and wipe your drivetrain dry, completely free of dirt and dust before applying the Muc-off Dry Lube.

What didn’t we like?
- No dealership in India
- Requires weekly re-application.
After application, we took the bike out for several long rides, short rides, and strenuous shifting while on climbs and while sprinting to the finish line. We tried the lube in the cold mornings, a well as tested it on the dust and heat which Mumbai is known for. The Muc-off Dry lube works perfectly fine in cold and hot conditions in the city.
Just after application, we noticed that the lube had an innate affinity to coat the chain and seep in every corner. The chain appeared dry as the lube penetrated between the links, coating the surface thoroughly. During our longer rides, the lube did not attract much of grit or get coated with a thick coat of dust. It offered an instant smooth and quite shifting throughout. For those who ride often, the lube needs to be re-applied after cleaning the drive train.
Over a period of time, the lube tends to get worn out with every ride and exposes the metal, making it prone to corrosion, etc. This rubbed away lubricant is thrown out in the form of black gunge from between the chain plates at the links, after a certain period of riding and wear and tear. We are sure you must have noticed it on your chain at some point after several rides. However, the lube which has already penetrated between the links continues to protect the chain.
For best results with Muc-off Dry lube:
- Apply Muc-off lube on clean dust free chain
- Make sure the drive train is completely dry before every application
- Apply moderate amount of lube and wipe off the excess
- Do not mix the lube with some other lube
- For better results always apply the lube from the inside
